Life Beyond Cancer

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/NCCN Cancer Survivorship Information™

Welcome to the DFCI/NCCN Cancer Survivorship Information™. You are one of 12 million cancer survivors currently living in the United States! As a survivor, you have overcome many challenges, and your strength and commitment have been important parts of this experience. Now as you finish treatment, we hope to help you stay healthy, in both body and mind.

People define “cancer survivor” in different ways. Some feel that a person is a survivor from the moment he or she is diagnosed with cancer. Others feel it is when treatment is finished. Some believe that survivorship starts 5 years after the cancer was diagnosed. Our goal is to help you transition from treatment to survivorship care—however you define survivorship.

These guidelines were developed by the NCCN and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They cover topics that cancer survivors may be interested in, such as:

  • health habits that can help prevent a new cancer
  • tips on how to eat healthy and exercise after cancer
  • feelings and emotions after treatment is over
  • information on fertility and sexual health
  • resources for survivors
  • and more

Coming off treatment can be emotional for patients. You may feel joyful, relieved, and grateful. Yet it’s also normal to feel nervous about not seeing your health care team as much as you used to or overwhelmed as you get back to normal life. There is no right or wrong way to feel during this significant transition. With these guidelines, our goal is to answer your questions and offer information about life as a survivor, to reduce stress and anxiety you may feel. Click on the links below to learn more.
